Building Stronger Communities, One Structure at a Time

The Hometown Foundation’s first project in the Historic South End of Kent. The building, built in 1923, was originally the Gugloz Brothers South End Market.

At the Hometown Foundation, we believe that strong communities start with stable, well-cared-for homes and businesses. Sponsored by Hometown Bank, our mission is to revitalize neighborhoods by transforming neglected and rental properties into beautiful, functional beautiful and functional structures for community minded individuals. Through thoughtful rehabilitation, we restore not just buildings but also a sense of pride and connection within our town.

Investing in Our Community’s Future

Too often, structures that once thrived become vacant, deteriorate, or are lost to short-term rental markets. The Hometown Foundation steps in to reclaim these properties, breathing new life into them while ensuring they remain a part of the community for generations to come. Our work doesn’t stop at renovation—we focus on sustainability, quality craftsmanship, and affordability, creating opportunities for individuals and businesses who are committed to the long-term well-being of our town.

Our Process

  1. Identifying Properties in Need – We purchase neglected, abandoned, or rental properties that have the potential for transformation.
  2. Rehabilitation & Restoration – Our team of skilled professionals revitalizes each home, ensuring it meets high standards of safety, efficiency, and charm.
  3. Finding the Right Owners – Once a home is ready, we connect with local buyers who share our commitment to the community.

Follow the Journey

Each home or commercial building has a story, and we want you to be part of it. Follow along as we document the transformation of every project, from acquisition to final sale. See how a once-forgotten house structures a cherished home or business and how our work is shaping the future of our town—one project at a time.

GUGLOS BROTHERS SOUTH END MARKET

Built in the winter of 1922-23 and opened in April of 1923 as the Gugloz Brothers South End Market, this building contributed to the hustle and bustle of our South End community for 37 years until the brothers William and August Gugloz closed the store. For the remainder of the time until today, it was used as an accounting office and later a residential apartment. The building has seen much hard use during those later years.

The Hometown Foundation is actively working to preserve this fine building to help revitalize the Historic South End Neighborhood. While it may be impractical to open again as a small market, it is certainly a great location for numerous other commercially needed uses. We look forward to completing this project and we are dedicated to seeing it used again as a valuable community asset. The building will be completed and offered for sale sometime in 2025.
