Questions?
What is a Smart Start Teen Account?
A Smart Start Teen Account is a checking account designed to help teens practice managing money with support from a parent or guardian. Learning how to manage money can bring up questions — and sometimes things do not go exactly as planned. That is why Hometown Bank is here to help. Whether your teen has a question about their debit card, needs help understanding a transaction, wants to learn how Mobile Banking works, or notices something that does not look right, our local team is available to answer questions, explain next steps, and help sort out problems.
Can the adult set spending limits, alerts or turn the card on or off?
No. Spending limits are set at account opening and can be personalized by the teen from the CardGuard mobile banking app. Adults can log on to see spending activity, but limits and alerts are specific to each debit card.
Who is the Smart Start Account for?
Smart Start is designed for anyone age 13-17 who are ready to begin learning real-world banking skills, including debit card use, spending, saving, and account management.
Does a Teen Debit Card Build Credit?
A Smart Start debit card helps teens practice money management, but debit cards generally do not build credit because purchases use money from the account instead of borrowed money. That makes Smart Start a great place to begin. Teens can learn the habits that matter before using credit later, including tracking spending, paying attention to balances, protecting personal information, and making thoughtful money decisions.
More information about teen accounts and credit can be found here: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: Youth Financial Education
